Monitor and Evaluate Noise
Program at a glance:
Program Code: MSS025025
AQF Level: Level 5
Length of Study: Minimim 70 hours
Study Options: Online
Self-paced Study: up to 100%
Campus Location: Brisbane, Australia

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare for and conduct noise surveys and report results:
- Noise evaluation in practice
- Sound and noise measurement
- Basic acoustics principles and noise mapping
You will be able to:
- Prepare for and conduct noise surveys using at least one handheld sound level meter and at least one fixed noise monitoring station
- Process, evaluate, verify and report data from noise surveys
- Apply basic acoustic principles and noise mapping techniques
How you will study:
You are required to complete activities from wherever you are comfortable learning. The activities consist of ‘Knowledge Base’ (theory) Study Modules and Skill-based Practical Field Work Modules. The Unit is designed for approximately 40 to 50 hours of knowledge base study, with 10 to 20 hours of practical work to complete.
- There are three (3) Knowledge Base Study Modules
- There are two (2) Skill-based Practical Field Work assignments
- Each knowledge base module has a set of 20 review questions and attainment questions
- Practical work requires presentation of monitoring and analysis reports
- A Statement of Attainment is awarded at the satisfactory completion of all modules
Tailor your training: The final Field Work Project is a comprehensive noise monitoring and assessment activity; the subject of the measurement and assessment can be tailored to your needs. The content for this activity must be accepted and approved by the trainer.
Support and Mentorship: To ensure your success, we provide a dedicated support bank of 4 hours per student which may be accessed remotely or in person (Brisbane). While most find the self-paced theory and basic practicals intuitive, this bank ensures you have expert 1-on-1 guidance exactly when you need it - specifically for the final comprehensive assignment where you will work side-by-side with your mentor.
The course covers the skills and knowledge required to competently apply a range of methods and technologies to conduct noise monitoring and evaluation. Our course is designed for:
- field staff, site coordinators, Health & Safety Representatives;
- managers and senior personnel employed by workplaces and unions in a wide range of industry sectors, e.g. manufacturing, building and construction, certification and audit
- regulatory authorities involved with noise assessment, evaluation and compliance
- professionals requiring skill and knowledge validation in the field of practical noise monitoring and evaluation
Each qualification, unit of competency or training module offered by Acoustar has a set fee for a training program provided at our Brisbane Training Centre.
It is Acoustar's policy that the fee is all-inclusive for tuition, support and coaching, specified textbooks (PDF versions), and use of our classroom/facilities in Brisbane. Fees and expenses are specified along with any additional requirements.
When there are additional requirements, normally associated with a training program (for example; reference material, research documents, own computer) the Student will be clearly advised of exactly what is required prior to commencement of the program or course.
Fees for a single student in a mentored program are:
- MSS025025 $1480.00 (GST exempt)
Students are entitled to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning.
Training Program Fees are published in our Fees Policy.
To enrol in this programme a potential student must be:
- At least 18 years of age
- An Australian resident or citizen who is eligible for a Unique Student Identifier (USI)
Our student enrolment process is:

- Provisional (Application by student of a USI code)
- Confirmed enrollment
- All of our coursework requires a good understanding of language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills (LLND). Acoustar requests an applicant to complete a LLND questionnaire before enrolment.
- Acoustar accepts applications for Recognition of Prior Learning. This process requires formal documentation and interview. RPL is not awarded for practical work – all students must satisfactorily complete this part of the programme.
Our student enrolment process is:
- Application & Assessment: Complete the online application form, including your USI and a brief LLND (Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital skills) questionnaire.
- Review & Invoice: We review your application to ensure the course meets your needs and issue your tax invoice.
- Confirmed Enrolment: Upon payment, you receive full access to the Student Portal to begin your studies.
All of our coursework requires a sound understanding of language, literacy, numeracy, and digital skills (LLND) skills. This initial assessment ensures you are well-positioned for success in the unit.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Acoustar offers an Experienced Practitioner Pathway for those already active in the field. This streamlined process recognizes your existing expertise while ensuring all regulatory standards are met.
- Theory Component: Experienced candidates complete Knowledge Base questions to verify current underpinning knowledge.
- Practical Component: In lieu of new field work, you may submit a Portfolio of Evidence. This includes recent noise survey reports and data sets that demonstrate your ability to meet the unit's practical requirements.
- Interview: A brief technical interview with a mentor to verify your submission.
The enrollment fee for the RPL pathway is the same as the standard training pathway. This fee covers the comprehensive mapping of your prior experience, the technical assessment of your portfolio, and the issuance of your Statement of Attainment.
